Metacognition is understood as knowledge and regulation of one’s one cognitive activity (Brown, 1997; Flavell, 1979; 1987; Schraw & Dennison, 1994). Since its inception, it has been recognized as any attempt to monitor and control one’s cognitive processes (Flavell, 1987). More recently, the construct has been used to refer to the type of cognition that references the development of personal agency over one’s mental activity in a deliberate and conscious manner. In this regard, metacognition has been described as the knowledge, regulation, and awareness that individuals establish regarding their own cognitive processes (Flavell, 1987; Gutierrez & Schraw, 2015; Kuhn, 2000; Tarricone, 2011).
